Artist Statement

Davey Whitcraft’s work proposes a closer relationship to the natural world using technological intervention. Davey collaborates with Artificial Intelligence to explore the boundaries of natural phenomena and propose ‘alternative’ architectures and physical earthly realities. The video works look at many possible futures through AI and other mediums to work toward technological ecosystems based on machinic abstractions and hybridization

Davey uses AI to propose ‘technologically native’ abstractions in video, exploring what AI’s ‘natural mode’ of creativity can be with minimal human intervention. The ‘highly abbreviated landscape photographs’ are works
of Visual Ecology, preserving and monumentalizing specific moments in time and space forever.

These photographs exploit the unique capabilities of the camera to expand on blatant phenomena which are normally overlooked. Each work represents a singular colorscape - specific to a time and place and, due to the
ever changing atmospheric and environmental conditions, can never be exactly reproduced again. Davey holds the experience of light and dimension to be at the center of his practice, and is a reflection of a search for the infinite and immaterial.

About Davey Whitcraft

Davey Whitcraft holds an MFA from University of California Los Angeles and a BFA from California College of the Arts, San Francisco, California.

His work has been included in museums including MOCA in Los Angeles, California, SF MOMA, LA Architecture + Design Museum, San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, Godwin-Ternbach Museum NY, Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia and exhibitions including Subliminal Projects Los Angeles, California, 323 Projects Los Angeles, California, Rietveld Art Academy Amsterdam, Netherlands, One-Off Moving Image Festival Copenhagen Denmark, Yami-ichi Brussels, Belgium, London West Gallery London, England and the Leap Second Festival, Norway.
