Intro to Bookbinding

Join artist and designer Derek Wilson and create your very own hand made book. This is a hands-on class where you will learn three traditional bookbinding methods: saddle stitch, Japanese side binding, and Concertina (accordion) binding.

Small mockups of each method will be created in class, with a finished book in of one of the methods. Handouts will be provided to use for future projects including layout formats for in InDesign or other page layout software as well as tips on how to make your own books in the future.

Materials and tools will be provided for bookbinding including: bone folders, upholstery needles, bookbinding thread, archival glue, paper for pages and cover stock.*

If you have personal materials you prefer to use, contact Saffron Communities for dimensions and quantity.

Derek Wilson has taught college level Graphic Design and Multimedia for 27 years in the Bay Area.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own lunch but you can bring $10 in cash if you’d like lunch, consisting of sandwich, chips, water and a cookie.
